Understanding Fertility Tests: Why You May Need Hormone Blood Tests and a Pelvic Scan

For Women Under 40 Experiencing Difficulty Conceiving

If you’ve been trying to get pregnant and it hasn’t happened yet, your doctor may suggest some simple tests to help understand what’s going on. Two common tests are:
1. Hormone Blood Tests
2. Pelvic Ultrasound Scan

These tests help find out why you may be having trouble conceiving and what can be done to help.

1. Hormone Blood Tests

Hormones are chemical messengers in your body. The right balance is needed for:
– Regular periods
– Healthy eggs
– Successful ovulation

These are some of the key hormones we check:

Hormone

What It Tells Us

FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone)

Checks if your ovaries are working well.

LH (Luteinising Hormone)

Helps detect problems with ovulation.

AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone)

Tells us how many eggs you might have left.

Estradiol (E2)

Shows how your ovaries are responding.

TSH (Thyroid hormone)

Thyroid problems can affect fertility.

Prolactin

High levels can stop ovulation.

Testosterone

Can be high in women with PCOS.

Why it matters: These tests help us understand if there’s a hormone imbalance that could be affecting your chances of getting pregnant.

2. Pelvic Ultrasound Scan

This is a safe and painless scan using sound waves to look inside your body. A small probe is gently inserted into the vagina to give a clear picture of your reproductive organs.

We use it to check:

Area

What We Look For

Ovaries

Are there many small cysts (a sign of PCOS)? Are eggs maturing properly?

Uterus

Are there fibroids or polyps that could block pregnancy?

Lining of the womb

Is it the right thickness to support a pregnancy?

Why it matters: The scan helps identify any physical problems that might be making it harder to conceive.

What Happens Next?

These tests are usually done early in your menstrual cycle. Once your doctor has the results, they can:
– Recommend lifestyle changes or supplements
– Suggest medication to help you ovulate
– Refer you for further tests or treatment, such as fertility procedures
